Information Tech Department Growth
Howdy folks! I get a bit dismayed as I have been so busy with sales work that I've not been able to post effectively as much as I want. So I'm frontloading posts a bit here so you'll start getting things regularly...and I'll have more things toward the end of the month when "sales life" explodes. :)
This is a great article from Mikko Peltoniemi at Spiceworks, as it really relates to a lot of you out there (and myself included). Trying to make things work while a company grows, only to find that you've been so busy with the growth that you lost the personal touch, and may have more work than expected with new things.
One of the things that Mikko mentions is finding new personnel to add to your IT staff...always a difficult thing. How do you find qualified people? How do you truly know they're qualified? It's a difficult thing...I know, I've worked in management before I came to be in Tech Sales, and hiring the right person is always a game of russian roulette...less if you can do your research on them...but a game nonetheless.
Enter PCM and my Services team. We have one of the best Tech Personnel/Staff Augmentation groups in the US working for us, providing the personnel you need, with the quality assurance of "hire them as a temp"...pay us to handle that mess...try them out for 30 days, and if you like them, pay the fee and hire them away from us." Got a large project that you need to get done, but don't have the expertise to do it? We have someone...either someone you can bring on as a temp, or our own service personnel for work like that. Don't try to train yourself and tackle something that is brand new...I and my team can connect you with the right people for the job!

Mondopad - King of Conference Rooms
You all know me...I almost never goggle over products. Then today our awesome InFocus rep happened to be in the office showing off their Mondopad. I heard him say it, and chuckled at the name, but went over to his table for a look-see. Total jaw-dropping surprise. Not only is this an amazing conference room tool...but this is exactly what we have been wanting in offices and homes for 50 years of technology. Note there is a 55" model and a 70" model. Wow!

Innovations in mouse technology...
Normally we really focus on what will affect your lives in IT. It could be new software or server tech...down to how to better manage your networking time (coughMERAKIcough). This time around, I was jumping around on Kickstarter this past week looking for new game projects to help fund, and I found this amazing thing:

Tell me that doesn't look amazing. I think the jury is out on if it will help us carpal tunnel sufferers, but the ability to not have to move back and forth from the keyboard to the mouse so much just SCREAMS productivity.
Right now you can help Kickstart the project, for $79 and receive one of the units after the kickstarter goes through and they get them made. Worth it. I think this one is coming out of my bonus money. :)
Leads me to ask...what kind of innovations are you all interested in seeing?

Dell goes Private...
The Dell issue has been talked about over the past few weeks, with rumors of a buyout. Now today, AP newswire has confirmed that Dell is going Private in a $24.4 billion dollar buyout. It looks like Michael Dell himself and a few financial partners (Microsoft is one, Silver Lake Partners another) are buying out his own company in order to take it Private.
There's going to be a lot of speculation on this for the coming weeks...on whether or not this is good for Dell as a whole. Yes, taking the company private makes them not accountable to anyone but themselves, and will likely allow them the chance to restructure much easier. Question is, who gets hurt? In these kinds of deals, usually it is the consumer who is hit with higher prices, reduced service and lack of accountability. I'm not saying that this can happen to Dell...but I've seen it happen before to other companies.
We in the DMR channel are waiting to hear what it will mean to us. We don't know yet...it could be very good for us and our clients, or it could spell the end of Dell working with the channel. Who knows? We're waiting and watching here.

HP's Elitepad 900 is almost here!
I think most of you know my history with HP and their Touchpad. I was an early adopter and loved the merits of that device and WebOS. It looked to be a good alternative to the iPad, and if marketed/priced right it could have been a great enterprise tool. However, with the status of executive management at HP in shambles, they bumbled the whole thing, and ended up falling flat on their faces. A lesser company would have given up and stayed out of that market...or worse, run themselves into the ground with a product that wasn't going to work. HP let WebOS die a very sad death in the OpenSource internet zone...and have been working on the ElitePad ever since.
Now we're faced with this bad boy, that can take on the enterprise space of IT, and do in the corporate world what the iPad cannot. Be a native. What I mean is that it's ready to work with the systems you already have, because let's face it, a VERY LARGE % of businesses do not have an Apple infrastructure. Those who are using iPads still have to cobble together a solution from companies like Airwatch or MobileIron or Meraki, in order to get the Apple products to play nicely in their space.
But what if you didn't have to do that?
Take a look at the site here. I had the chance last week to handle the Elitepad 900 and was thoroughly pleased with it. As many of you know I own a Nexus 7 tablet, and love that too...but if given the chance, I'd give it up for the Elitepad 900. Why? Let's count off the awesome features:
Yes, yes I know this looks all well and good. The Expansion jacket adds USB ports, an HDMI port, and and MMC port...add the battery portion and BLAMMO, this tablet becomes ultra useful in the corporate environment. Add the display dock & keyboard...and you've got a real mobile desktop setup.
While not cheaper than the iPad on release...come Feb 7 when these are in stock, there will likely be plenty of deals floating around. Keep your eyes locked here for more details!

Jailbreakers are locked out!
One of the more interesting news items that's come down the pike in the past week was the note that iOS jailbreaking site, Hackulous, shut itself down. Claiming that their forums are too difficult to maintain because they're a "ghost town" seems a bit nonsensical...so I'm willing to agree with this article here that it's likely because there is no ability to jailbreak into iOS 6.
For those of you who don't fully understand, people "jailbreak" their iPhones in order to put unapproved apps, and pirated apps onto their phone for free. Illegal and immoral, yes. Not to mention a great way to brick your phone and make it more useless.
If you can't use it as the manufacturer intended, you should move over to Android since there's a ton of apps for that, and plenty of ways to circumvent that system without creating trouble for yourself.
Or...maybe...JUST MAYBE...use the phone like you're supposed to. I've done my time breaking systems...it doesn't do you any good when you destroy the device you own AND get yourself in trouble. :)

Holiday Hangover
Hello everyone! Man...it's been awhile. First, let me apologize for such a delay in posting. The holidays mixed with a massive amount of business these past two months (and losing a member of the Dragontech team) kept me from posting at the pace I had set for myself. This is always the case right? We get going on things, and are then sidelined/sidetracked by things outside our control. We're still here...working hard at making this tech blog useful to you as a resource, and a place to bring you our wacky senses of fun.
So, first things first. You'll see above that we've changed our name from PCMallDragontech to PCMDragontech. With PCMall changing how it operates with the many brands and companies underneath that banner...we as a company opted to change our name to PCM. The name reflects a new outlook on our company, and a change from how we were under the former name. We're bigger, badder, better prepared, and moving with the times under this new name...and 2013 is going to be a great year, I can just tell.
Something came up recently while I was asked to guest blog on another site. They were concerned that I was going to pitch specific products designed to make me money and take advantage of their users. So to answer a few things here...
So in closing...if you're reading this and you're a client of the Dragontech team, CALL US TODAY. Why? Hey...we're working today to support you and all of our other clients. Cyber Monday Strikes Back
At times, in the SMB consulting business, we are approached by friends and family at this time of year about deals and bargains. I've seen many a salesperson shy away like Luke crawling away from Vader in Cloud City. Like this would be a bad thing? I help someone, they refer me. You never know who you're going to find right? :)
Those of you who know me know that I'm not a "doorbuster" kind of person. In reality, if you have to trick people to buy your products, you're only hurting them and yourself in the long run. Are my prices higher than my competitor? In some cases yes, and some cases no. So today was some folks asking about what amazing deals were available, and most often I would say, "When do I not give you a good deal?" :)
So, for those of you who missed last week...make sure and go and read about how gigantic Cisco bought little Meraki for $1.26 billion dollars, and is giving them the red carpet treatment. Also for those who are experimenting with Windows 8, first, good for you for not being afraid of it (or teaching co workers not to be afraid...), second...did you know that they are embedding license codes in the BIOS? Chant with me, no more stickers, no more stickers, no more stickers!
It's truly been an interesting day. :)

Windows 8 - 4 Million already?
Wow. I know that I'm always big on new things, and Windows 8 is the newest kid on the block...but 4 million upgrades in as many days? That boggles the mind. Over on ArsTechnica, they mentioned quite a bit about this...but from my experience in the industry, this is a much faster adoption than Windows 7.
You can say that it might be because the price point is right. For $40 you can get Windows Pro, and that's a steal in itself already. If you just recently bought a computer (since June) you can get a Windows 8 upgrade for just $15! No the product isn't perfect, but then is Windows ever perfect??? My experience has been wonderful with it (despite having to restore my computer to pre-win8-candidate install and losing all of my music...thank you iTunes Match for saving my ass) , and seeing it run on my 4 year old C2D laptop quite well is a joy. (Many of you don't know I did get Windows 7 to run on an ancient IBM T21 laptop with only 512mb of ram...so Microsoft is thinking about people with older computers now.)
So if you haven't looked at it...do so. Install it on your wife's/husband's computer...see how they react to it. After the day long learning curve, it's been smooth sailing ever since.

Meraki's newest products and Software Update!
As many of you know, I spent a couple days up at Meraki's offices during the first week of October, being technically trained on their MX Routers, MS Switches, MR wireless units, and their Systems Manager program. It was an intense 2 days, and really forced me (who's not actually worked on a switch since 2006) to dig in and remember what I had to do. I trained alongside some great smaller local VARS, as well as a couple of folks from Italy & Japan who flew in for the training. I was the only large VAR present...and it felt VERY weird. I was the slow kid with the switch and router, but the second day with the Wireless and System Manager, I was far ahead of everyone else. It was a great experience to learn directly from them, and now that I'm certified, I can teach and assist my coworkers and their clients when it comes to Meraki.
I also learned that driving to San Francisco from Los Angeles on a time schedule is more stressful than it's worth. But it was fun to fly along the 5 Freeway at 2am doing 110mph. ;) Ok on to new stuff!
Announced this past week, Meraki has a couple new products and whole host of features added in their latest software update. Let's discuss what they have...
First up is the new MX60W. This combo unit of their MR12 wireless & MX60 router creates a complete access & security solution for a branch office, or a home office. It'll provide the enterprise quality for wired and wireless connectivity, a firewall, site to site vpn, content filtering and the new Intrusion Detection System (see below). MSRP: $845
The next new piece of hardware is designed for the Cloud-managed teleworker. Have some of your staff working from home a couple days a week? How about one of these little guys to help make sure that any resources they are pulling are not compromised? The Z1 is a small form factor unit with 4 ports for printers, phones and other devices (a 1GbE WAN port and 4 GbE LAN ports) and a dual-concurrant 802.11n wireless radio. Looks great doesn't it? While it's not a full access point, it'll definitely be a much cheaper unit to purchase for your teleworkers than a full access point. MSRP $199 (PC Mall price $172.99)
Intrusion Detection System (IDS) - Before you'll remember that I mentioned Intrusion Detection System. Meraki is now including IDS in their routers/switches, and it should have been pushed down recently to your system. Built on Sourcefire's Snort, it features signature, protocol, and anomaly based inspection. It'll deliver some iron-clad security, while allowing it to be monitored from your Meraki Dashboard.
Bounjour Gateway - Yup, they've finally added this, and I can hear network admins cheering. (One of my friends just said that sounds a lot like zombies saying, "brains...brains..." but you can't please everyone.) With all of the Apple TV units, iPods, printers and AirPlay mirroring out there, this will allow you to throttle the Bonjour traffic, much like how you manage your Layer 7 Traffic Shaper. Hooray there!
Traffic Shaper Enhancements - Whammo! This now has a better classification engine, so it'll have better application insight, and report web browsing activity.
I've got a special training with my friends at Meraki next week, in which we're going to go over these enhancements as well as a few more things for their Systems Manager program.

From what I've seen, it looks a bit more streamlined, a little less annoying, and a cleaner product.

Adobe Code Signing Hacked!
(This was brought to me by my teammate, Joshua Fisher...)
Right up here on the Adobe Secure Software Engineering Team Blog is the statement you need to read. While the folks at Adobe were able to identify and remove the malicious code, it remains that it has been in their system since Early July.
Adobe has asked, and I concur, that if you've experienced anything odd on your systems, to contact their support page. (Me, I would go around and start making sure your av & anti malware software are running. I've had several mysterious Trojans appear on my work desktop, and they've been taken out by Symantec. Malwarebytes always is a good tool to have on every computer too. :) )

Apple vs. Samsung - Round 2: Legal Smackdown
This just in...
(I've always wanted to type that.)
Looks like Apple got what they wanted in their lawsuit against Samsung for infringing their patent on the iPad. (You know, the device that existed long before in design before Apple made it a reality...thank you Star Trek.) The patent revolves around the design of the device and how it is similar to Apple's iPad. The courts originally told Apple no, but the court of appeals said otherwise, granting them a preliminary injunction (sales ban) against Samsung's Galaxy 10.1 and has pretty much forced this to a trial by jury.
Originally, Samsung countered this in Germany and other places by designing the Galaxy 10.1 N, which looks a little different than their standard model. LOOKS. This isn't about the system itself of what the product does...Apple has stated that they're concerned that Samsung is pushing "cheap knockoffs" that look like their product into the market. My opinion? Horsehockey. Samsung is a competitor, Apple is sue-happy (much like Microsoft used to be), and Apple doesn't like competition...from Google, Samsung, Microsoft or anyone else. Other such knockoffs exist, and I'm sure Apple will find a way to go after Microsoft in the future for something to do with the soon-to-release Surface.
Like I said above, this is going to a trial by jury, so that'll be the proving ground. It'll be interesting to see how this will pan out for all parties involved. Maybe Apple needs to sue Paramount for reruns of Star Trek that have their pads in them too...they look awful similar. ;)
Lastly, before the Apple-fanboys get on here and flame me, let me say this. I own Apple products, but I am allowed an opinion on their tactics in the free market...which are poor and heavy handed when they don't need to be.

LinkedIn's broken password chain

I know this isn't the standard cool IT stuff that you should know & care about...but it's something worth noting. Looks like according to LinkedIn's own page and twitter feed, that they were hacked this week, losing over 600,000 encrypted passwords....of which maybe a third were cracked.
So if you're on LinkedIn, change your password. The spam is starting to erupt there already.
In the meantime, I'm running a contest. If you sign up for a free webex 14 day trial, I'll put you in a raffle to win a $5 starbucks gift card (or a $5 gift card somewhere). But you need to contact me for the link and I'll put your name in the raffle.

Uberconference brings a unique solution
Good morning!
I actually was turned onto this by our local news at KTLA here in Los Angeles. Rich Demuro mentioned it this morning...and I was quite surprised at what he said, so the second I got to the office (before I started work), I had to check it out.
Lo and behold, I think this has promise. An online conference call management tool, that lets you see who is talking, and learn more about them through social media. Click the link below and check it out. While it hasn't released yet, get involved now while it's in beta...see what it is. I've got a good feeling about it!
