With the great rush of consumer items into the IT world (see my Consumerization of IT post awhile back) and a good majority of them being Apple products, what are you the IT person supposed to do when it comes to these devices? It used to be that IT would dictate what machines would be used and how things would be run, but now, more and more top-level execs are telling their IT divisions that they want Apple right there on their desk. How many of you are confident with those products? Raise your hands.
Ok...so about 15-20% of you are. The rest of you should get on board this train before it leaves you at the station in a whirl of leaves and old newspapers. There is a way to do this without having to run around and look where there are training centers, or where you can go...
We can help you there. (What? You didn't think I had an answer? Come on.)
PC Mall actually has classes we're going to be holding at our headquarters in El Segundo, CA...and for those of you not lucky enough to be local to us, there's an alternative. We can come to you. Now there are requirements for everything, and it does cost money...but wouldn't you rather be trained by the team that works for Dr. Robert Kite? Take a look at this document about what we're offering, and see if it meets your needs. Have questions? Give us a call. Interested in talking to our services division about this? Give us a call. Want to buy me lunch? Give us a call.
(what? I had to give it a shot. :) )

Who wants a free microserver?
I think you all remember the microserver we were almost giving away a couple months back...so popular we sold out 4 hours after announcing its pricedrop. Now you can get one for free...and now that I have your attention...here's how:
HP has a special deal right now they're working with us here at PC Mall. Purchase a DL385 G7 server (yup that's an AMD server) by March 12, and you'll get it. See the picture below...

Now those prices are pretty good...but if you need a couple of them, I'm sure we can work out a deal. Hard drive prices are still a little harsh right now, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Give it a month or two and things will be not as annoying as they are now. :)

Service is King
Howdy folks! I know that I've spoken with many of my clients about services that PC Mall offers, and some of you can speak to effect about how much we can do. Really, everyone needs help at one time or another. Whether it's needing a helpdesk to answer questions, finding temporary help for large projects, fixing how a switch closet is laid out, implementing a project (VOIP/datacenter upgrade/VMWare/etc.), and many other things...PC Mall can help you solve these problems.
Most often I hear, "I didn't know you did that" and that's a fair assessment...sometimes it's a little daunting to explain what we can do. However that problem is a thing of the past. This video from Phil Mogavero, our VP of Advanced Technology Solutions at PC Mall, helps explain some of our primary strengths. Anything outside of those, we usually have a partner we work with to affect solutions. Take a look and let me know what you think. I'm always game to understand clients' thoughts when it comes to what we can do better for business.
Have a great Friday and Weekend, and we'll see you back here on Monday! :)

Anonymous vs. Symantec: Round 2
This one just came across my email from this morning. If you're a Symantec customer, please be advised. :P
Tom Espiner, ZDNet UK | February 8, 2012 11:15 AM PST
Anonymous activists have released source code for PCAnywhere onto the Pirate Bay file-sharing website on Tuesday and the BitTorrent link was included in a post to the AnonymousIRC Twitter account, which has been used to publicize the activist group's claims in the past.
"Symantec can confirm that the source code is legitimate," the company said. "Be advised, we also anticipate Anonymous to post the rest of the code they have claimed have in their possession. So far, they have posted code for the 2006 version of Norton Internet Security and PCAnywhere. We also anticipate that at some point, they will post the code for Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition and Norton Systemworks."
In negotiations between a purported Symantec employee called 'Sam Thomas' and a hacker called 'YamaTough', who claimed to be a member of the Lords of Dhamaraja activist group, which is associated with Anonymous, YamaTough appeared to be blackmailing Symantec for cash to destroy stolen source code, and the Symantec appeared to offer Yamatough $50,000 to do it.
Extortion failed - Anonymous posts Symantec source code

Vcenter Operations from VMWare
Howdy folks! Back again today with some information from our friends over at VMWare. This is a 24 minute presentation on the Vcenter Operations product that they've put up on Youtube. This product will now give end users a more comprehensive view of monitoring/reporting for their entire Vsphere environment of health, performance, and capacity...all from a single pane of glass! (I'm not sure I like that term, but if you're in IT you know what that means.)
Take a look and if you have any questions...let us know! :)

Microsoft SQL 2012 - just around the corner!
That's right folks, I had a nice training today about the fact that SQL 2012 is coming soon, and how Microsoft is changing their licensing format for it. Yes, the new release will be more expensive, but then Microsoft always raises its prices with each new iteration of their product. The point is, who is helping you keep that cost down? If you aren't working with us, I think you're selling yourself a little short. Let me explain...
1) We have a dedicated Microsoft team to answer questions - You don't have to rely on just your rep here at PC Mall, we've got more resources than you'd want to shake a stick at, and they want to help you!
2) Microsoft Licensing is a tricky thing to navigate, and it never hurts to have someone work with you to achieve your goal.
These two things are quite clear, and as someone who's been trained on a lot of Microsoft (my own choice)...you've got to have a champion or two to help out.
Back to the original point of this was to let you know that SQL 2012 is coming in late March/early April. In fact, Microsoft is holding an online SQL Server launch in order to help get some of the questions out of the way before the release. Put it on your calendar to see...don't make me call you about it. :)
WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU IS THIS...If you haven't picked up the recent version of SQL with Software Assurance, NOW is the time to do so. Why? Well you're going to avoid a 21% price increase that's coming...and nobody wants to pay far more than necessary right?
It's easy and affordable...heck, it can even be financed if you want. All we have to do is have a conversation about it. Call your rep here at PC Mall today...and if you're not working with one of this team yet (Myself, Thaddeus, Matt, Dwight, Alberto and Josh)...fill out the contact form here, and we'll help you!
Have a great Tuesday! :)
